Priley Riley, Body cast, 20th March 2014

The first stage towards making my ice sculpture was done today when a cast of my chest was made using ground alabaster. I decided to make the ice sculpture of myself for a few reasons; it makes the work more personal, I wanted to experience being cast, and as I am quite small the final ice sculpture will be easier to fit in the freezer and lighter and easier to move. I wanted to have my hand on my chest so that when the heart is frozen inside the ice sculpture it looks like my hand is holding my heart. At the moment the cast is a ‘negative’ of what I need; the hand, for example, curves into the body instead of out from it. I hope to make a positive from this cast tomorrow.
