Priley Riley, Solent Showcase exhibition, January 2017

I did this small pencil drawing of my mum for a portraiture exhibition at Solent Showcase Gallery, in Southampton, England. The exhibition, titled Small Faces, will take place from 3rd March – 21st April 2017 (which includes Mother’s Day in the UK). The drawing will become part of the Gallery Community Art Archive and could be shown in other locations at a later date.

Priley Riley, Semester 1, January 2017

I’ve had quite a difficult semester after the passing of a relative, hence my quietness. Despite this, things are going smoothly with my art- I got a Merit in my first essay at Masters level. My work is currently focused on colour and how trichromats (people with ‘normal’ colour vision) may see colour differently. I’ve read some very interesting books on colour, including books by scientist Oliver Sacks as part of my research. I’ve visited more exhibitions and galleries, including the Robert Rauschenberg exhibition at the Tate, the William Kentridge exhibition in Whitechapel Gallery, etc. I have also exhibited my own work (3 large drawings) at the Winchester School of Art. I submitted my second essay earlier this week, which asks ‘Can the colour red look different to trichromats with an illness or disability?’- Within this I aim to demonstrate how we don’t all see colour in exactly the same way, which I think is important to consider when creating or viewing artwork. My practical artwork for this semester is due this Friday the 20th.
